BBC Wiltshire, Women in Business Event 3 October 2019

Saleha El D. Pinhorn (LanguageLabSaleya) & Michelle Eddahar (behind the dynamic and supportive ‘Wiltshire Women In Business’ Facebook group) @ The Big Event, Marlborough Golf Club

Last Tuesday, I noticed a post by Michelle Eddahar on Wiltshire Women In Business’ Facebook group - BBC Wiltshire were looking for a guest speaker, to join their Breakfast Show on Thursday morning from the Swindon and Wiltshire LEP Event with Ben Prater to talk about Women in Business.

I spotted an opportunity to talk about my Language Business (LanguageLab|LLS) but also represent and promote the fantastic networking group "Wiltshire Women in Business"!

Needless to say that I was prepared, but in reality I didn’t get enough time to say everything I wanted to, so this blog post is a sort of 'let's talk more'.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience & would suggest anyone to grab such opportunities, don’t think too much about it, just do it!

Women in Business and networking

Self-employed business women, like me, will tend to choose the networking route in order to promote their business but that's not the end of it! I believe technology has been a driving force behind this phenomenum with the rise of social media.

From the moment I was confirmed on the BBC Wiltshire Business Broadcast, I started thinking and a few thoughts sprung to mind:

  • What are the benefits of networking?

  • Why do we network?

  • Women networking versus Men networking?

That's the result of my thinking - SP

Obviously we are all different and we do things differently for various reasons and sometimes the reasons are very obscure. So, from my personnal perspective and experience here is why I network:

  1. I "look for a close inner circle of women".

  2. I do focus a lot on building a long term personal connection or/and friendship.

  3. I have a "what can I positively add to the group attitude.

  4. I enjoy the social aspect of networking, being self employed with a home office can get rather lonely.

Networking in a nutshell

Now, because I know very well that I speak too much, yes I can go on for hours and sometimes I sprung into singing "Gold, always belive in your soul..." but that's an other story! I decided to put down some keywords for the interview related to Women in Business and networking, and this is what I came up with:

C ... connection and collaboration

S ... support and social

A ... advice

F ... focus, face2face

G ... goals

M... mindset (right mindset)

E... experiences

T... technology

SB.... slow burner

I enjoy connecting with people, listening to advice and their experiences which keeps me focused, staying in the right mindset in order to achieve my goals. More so, the social support has a non negligible positive/happy impact, thanks to the advance of technology we continue to connect online. Networking is a slow burning process, it doesn't happen overnight.
